Threshold and aspiration-level choice
Speed-daters set an aspiration level from their own self-perceived attractiveness (Todd et al., 2007, PNAS); online daters aim about 25% above themselves and reply rates fall as the gap widens (Bruch & Newman, 2018, Science Advances). That is why the read is a threshold curve, not a ladder.
The 100-ms first impression and its dimensions
Trait judgments of a face are formed after a 100-ms look (Willis & Todorov, 2006) and fall on approachability, dominance and youthful-attractiveness (Sutherland et al., 2013) — a structure that largely held across 11,570 people in 41 countries (Jones et al., 2021, Nature Human Behaviour).
Body, posture, grooming — the changeable levers
Perceived upper-body strength explains more than 70% of men's bodily attractiveness (Sell et al., 2017); expansive posture raised the odds of a speed-date 'yes' by 76% (Vacharkulksemsuk et al., 2016, PNAS); 351 women rated heavy stubble the most attractive facial-hair level (Dixson & Brooks, 2013).
