The 80/20 rule in dating: where it came from, and what real dating app data shows
The dating 80/20 rule began with 27 women’s self-reports, while Hinge found half of men’s likes went to about 15% of men.

Someone told you that 80% of women only want the top 20% of men, and your match count seems to agree. Before you let that settle into a verdict, look at where the number came from.
The meme traces to a 2015 Medium post built on 27 women’s self-reported like rates and an assumption its own author called the biggest flaw. The exact sentence was 80/22 and 78/20, and it described likes, not dating or sex. Real platform data do show concentrated attention, and this page says so plainly, but the jump from likes to relationships has no data behind it.

Where does the 80/20 rule in dating come from?
The dating version came from worst-online-dater’s “Tinder Experiments II,” published on Medium on 24 March 2015. It applied the Pareto principle to a model of Tinder likes—not couples, sex or relationship outcomes. Read the archived original.
The post started with 27 women chatting with a fake male profile after liking it; no men were surveyed, and it did not observe which men women liked. It assumed all women like the same men, which the author himself called the biggest flaw of the analysis.

The viral sentence retained the ratio but dropped the sampling, self-report and modelling limits.
The post may capture unequal attention; its method cannot establish its size across Tinder users.
What did the Tinder experiment actually measure?
The original Tinder experiments measured artificial profiles and a modelled survey, not platform-wide chances. Part I used Google Images photos of “attractive” and “unattractive” men, each swiping right on every woman shown.
The attractive profile, aged 26, was liked back by 22.6% of the women it liked. The unattractive profile matched with 0.5%, or 0.4% when the same photos were set to age 26. Those figures came from two profiles with few reported details, so they illustrate a test setup, not a population estimate. The archived Part I post is the record.
Part II’s 0.87% estimate came from an exponential curve fit to 27 self-reports. It was not observed. The post calculated a Gini coefficient of 0.58 for likes received by men and compared it with 0.41 for US income, a comparison built on the same assumptions.
The author himself wrote that a low like rate does not mean a man is unattractive: above-average men may still be liked by only a few percent of women. If you have started reading your match count as a measure of your worth, feeling invisible to women is the more useful place to start.
Anonymity and lack of peer review limit what the experiment can prove.

Did OkCupid find that women rate 80% of men as unattractive?
No. OkCupid’s 2009 post said women rated 80% of men as “worse-looking than medium” on a 0–5 scale. Medium was the midpoint; that is not “below average,” “unattractive” or “women will not date them.” OkCupid’s archived post gives the chart and wording.
Men’s messages were more concentrated: two-thirds went to the best-looking third of women; the most attractive men received 11 times the messages of the lowest-rated men, and medium-rated men about four times as many.
A later peer-reviewed study found women rated men lower—2.13 versus 2.84 on a 5-star scale—but described one site, not relationships.
OkCupid supplied behavioral data, but gave no sample size, date range or collection method; its ratings concerned profile photos on one site in 2009.
Are likes on dating apps really concentrated on a few men?
Yes—attention inequality on apps is real and large. Hinge’s 2017 company Q&A: incoming likes had a Gini index of 0.542 for straight men and 0.376 for straight women, while men sent first likes more than three times as often.

In Pew’s 2022 survey, 64% of men who used a dating site or app in the past year said they had at least sometimes felt insecure because of the lack of messages, versus 40% of women. The 2019 survey found 57% of men versus 24% of women felt they did not get enough messages; the questions and time windows differ, so this is not a trend.
When Hinge counted connections, straight men’s Gini fell from 0.542 to 0.324. Hinge also reported that women around the 80th percentile of incoming likes formed 27% more connections than the most-liked women.
Hinge’s Q&A has no sample, date range or method, so it is not an audited census. A Quillette essay reported 0.324 as the Gini women faced; in Hinge’s post, 0.324 is straight men’s connection Gini and 0.376 is straight women’s incoming-like Gini.
The inequality lives at the swipe, not in the relationship. A like is a cheap expression of interest; a connection requires reciprocity, and a relationship requires more.
Hinge shows an attention gap, but not dates, sex, relationships or how many men ever partner.
Do women only message the top men?
No. Both men and women reach upward, but most contact people roughly at their own level. Bruch and Newman studied heterosexual users of a free dating site in New York, Boston, Chicago and Seattle in January 2014. Read the peer-reviewed study.
Men messaged women ranked 26% higher than themselves, and women messaged men ranked 23% higher. That is aspiration, not a top-20% embargo.
The hard part: replies from more desirable women never exceeded 21%, and men were more than twice as likely to get replies from women less desirable than themselves. Reaching up can work, but researchers said it takes two or three times as many messages. More than 80% of first messages were sent by men; women’s average reply rate was below 20%.
Hitsch, Hortaçsu and Ariely studied 3,004 men and 2,783 women; first-contact emails rose with photo attractiveness for both sexes. Matched couples had a partner-photo correlation of ρ = 0.31. Kreager and colleagues found both sexes messaged socially desirable people; women sent messages four times less often.
Feingold’s meta-analysis found a looks correlation of r = .39 across 27 romantic-couple samples. Hitsch et al. note couple correlations between 0.34 and 0.54. Couples are often similar in looks, but a moderate correlation does not assign 80% of women to 20% of men.
These studies span older sites and desirability definitions, describing recurring mechanisms rather than a universal app law.
Do 20% of men really have most of the sex?
The data show a heavier top tail among men, but they do not show that 20% of men have most of the sex. In the CDC’s 2015–2019 National Survey of Family Growth, sexually experienced men aged 25–49 reported a median of 6.3 lifetime opposite-sex partners, compared with 4.3 for women; 28.3% of men reported 15 or more, versus 12.9% of women.
That is partial truth, not the viral claim. Summing the published bins, we found 88.9% of sexually experienced men reported two or more lifetime opposite-sex partners and 66.6% reported five or more. The denominator excludes men who never had sex; men tend to report more partners, so it has limits.
Harper and colleagues reported a median of one past-year opposite-sex partner for both men and women, including the top 20% in their analysis. That measures a year, not lifetime accumulation; top-20% is a percentile threshold, not a share of women.
Ueda and colleagues found the share of US men aged 18–24 reporting no sex in the past year rose from 18.9% in 2000–2002 to 30.9% in 2016–2018. The rise was concentrated among unmarried men and men with lower income or part-time or no employment; it does not show that a small group monopolises women.
Sexual self-reports have recall limits, and populations and time windows differ; none turns a dating-app like distribution into a population-wide pairing ratio.
What does the data say men can actually do?
The data support consent-forward improvements: make the profile legible, use clear photos, contact people near your own level, and treat online dating as one channel rather than a referendum. In Tyson et al.’s profiles, stock male profiles averaged 16 matches without a bio and 69 with a bio; one volunteer got 234 matches with one photo and 1,568 with three photos. These were experimental profiles and one volunteer: directional evidence, not a promise.

Online became the most common way US heterosexual couples met, rising from 2% in 1995 to 39% in 2017. How couples meet and where to meet women are more useful than whether a fictional ratio has sentenced you.
Profile effort can help, but no experiment isolates every cause or app metric measures your full offline presence.
