The bathroom light is overhead, your phone is held at arm's length, and your hair is pushed back harder than it ever is in public. You take another photo because the first two were somehow "not accurate". A week of evening checks later, you have a camera roll full of temples and still no answer to the only question you care about: am I balding?

The direct answer: stop trying to solve a slow change with a single mirror session. Check the real signs, then use the dated-photo test — the same four views, light, distance, and dry hair, with a new set after three months. If the change survives, take it to a doctor.

Why can't you tell by looking in the mirror?

You are asking one untrained observer to detect gradual change without a baseline. In Taylor et al. (2004), exact agreement with a trained observer was only 48–55%, compared with 85% agreement between two trained observers.

Your hair is a moving target: lighting changes, hair is wet or dry, you adjust the angle, and attention locks onto the most alarming feature. A mirror gives you a frame, not a comparison.

A single bad photograph can make a normal crown look alarming; the limit of any home check is that it can show a pattern, not diagnose its cause.

The dated-photo test: how to check properly

The dated-photo test is deliberately boring, which is its strength. It removes the changing light, styling, distance, and memory that turn uncertainty into an all-day investigation.

  1. Choose one setup: Use the same room and light each time; do not switch from bathroom overhead light to a bright window.
  2. Keep the distance fixed: Put the phone at the same distance and height. Mark the spot if needed; consistency matters more than quality.
  3. Use the same hair state: Photograph dry, unstylised hair, not freshly wet hair or hair arranged to hide or expose a corner.
  4. Take four views: Capture the hairline from the front, crown from above, and both temples, with similar framing.
  5. Date the files: Use a dated filename or keep the original capture date. Do not rely on memory.
  6. Wait, then re-shoot: Take the same set again in three months. Compare side by side, then stop checking until the next date.

Is it balding, or a maturing hairline?

A receding temple line is not automatically male pattern baldness. Gan and Sinclair found bitemporal recession in 98.6% of men in Maryborough, and its severity was not significantly associated with age. Hamilton classified Types I–III as not bald; later Norwood classification is useful for vocabulary, not panic.

It is common enough that a questionable temple does not make you unusual. Cortez et al. Earlier is better because treatment defends what is there far better than it recovers what is gone. If two dated photo sets show a consistent pattern, make an appointment with a doctor or dermatologist and bring the images. This belongs in a doctor's office, not a forum.
