Attractiveness myths, fact-checked: 14 claims and what the evidence says
Fourteen claims about looks, each rated supported, mixed, unsupported or fabricated, with the source or the absence of one.

You are halfway through writing a post about attractiveness when your cursor stops on a statistic: “People judge a face in 100 milliseconds.” You search the phrase, find the same numbers repeated across several pages, and need to know whether you are citing research or copying a rumor with footnotes.
That is the exact job of this page. We checked fourteen claims, separated evidence from overreach, and marked the claims we could not trace. Fact-checking does not make appearance anxiety disappear. Most of these claims get repeated because someone was scared, not because someone was lying.

How we rate these claims
“Unsupported” means no evidence was found, not proof of falsehood. “Fabricated” means a figure has no traceable source and appears invented and copied. “Supported” means a study found it; “Mixed” means evidence points both ways or the effect is smaller than claimed.

Supported
Willis and Todorov found judgments formed after roughly 100 milliseconds.
“Attractiveness is entirely subjective, it is just personal taste.”
Mixed
Langlois et al. (2000) reviewed eleven meta-analyses and found strong within- and across-culture agreement among raters. See the research index.
“Langlois reviewed 919 studies with 12,261 raters.”
Fabricated
We could not trace “919 studies,” “12,261 raters,” “1,800 articles,” or “919 effect sizes” to Langlois, which contains eleven meta-analyses. Real World Appeal repeated some in the past, then removed them.
“Men and women look for the same things everywhere in the world.”
Mixed
Buss (1989) surveyed 37 cultures and approximately 10,047 people, finding consistent patterns and cross-cultural variation.
“Body shape preferences are just cultural fashion.”
Mixed
Singh (1993) found waist-to-hip ratio preferences in tested samples, so “only fashion” omits a measured effect. It does not establish a universal, fixed preference; see men’s body measurement statistics.

Claims about specific features
Sleep and skin can affect perception, but a small effect is not a permanent identity.
“Beauty sleep is real.”
Supported
Axelsson et al. (2010) photographed 23 participants and had 65 observers rate them. After sleep deprivation, perceived attractiveness moved from 40 to 38 on a 100 mm scale, with p < 0.001. It is a small experimental effect, not a permanent change after one bad night.
“Being tired makes people less likely to want to spend time with you.”
Supported
Sundelin et al. (2017) used 25 photographed participants and 122 raters, comparing two nights of 8 hours with two nights of 4 hours. Willingness to socialize moved -0.15; attractiveness moved -0.09. Both were statistically significant, with social appeal moving more.
“Looking tired makes you look less trustworthy.”
Unsupported
In the same Sundelin et al. study of 25 photographed participants and 122 raters, trustworthiness moved -0.04 with p = 0.206, not statistically significant: unconfirmed here, not disproved everywhere.
“The golden ratio defines a beautiful face.”
Unsupported
We could not find peer-reviewed evidence that a phi-based facial mask predicts attractiveness. Langlois et al. (2000), a review containing eleven meta-analyses, found raters judge faces as wholes. The mask claim lacks support.
“Most men are bald by 35.”
Mixed
Circulating figures measure different outcomes: any appreciable hair loss versus clinically graded androgenetic alopecia. They are not interchangeable; see our male hair loss statistics explainer.
“Acne is a teenage problem.”
Mixed
The American Academy of Dermatology reports approximately 85% of people aged 12 to 24 experience at least minor acne, while adult acne affects up to 15% of women. NIAMS says acne is more common in males during the teenage years and in women when it persists into adulthood. See men’s skin statistics.
“Skin cancer is mostly a women’s issue.”
Unsupported
The American Academy of Dermatology estimates lifetime melanoma will affect 1 in 28 men and 1 in 39 women, with 5,500 male and 3,010 female melanoma deaths in 2026. The claim is unsupported; appearance concerns are no excuse to ignore sun protection or changing skin.

Claims about the tools and the industry
“AI face scoring is objective.”
Unsupported
NIST tested 189 face-recognition algorithms from 99 developers on 18.27 million images of 8.49 million people and found false-positive differentials often ranging from a factor of 10 to 100 times across demographic groups. That was identity matching, easier and better-audited than attractiveness prediction; consistent output is not objective truth. See our AI face analysis glossary.
“Face rating apps are free.”

Fast impressions and shared preferences exist; sleep can affect social appeal; popular numbers are overstated or fabricated. Attraction is not fixed, universal, or reducible to a facial formula. Check source, population, and claim size.
