Frame mogged: what it means, and what it's actually measuring

Frame mogging compares two men's shoulder width on camera. Measured properly, skeletal shoulder width is the least variable part of the male torso.

A clip autoplays: two men are standing shoulder to shoulder, and the comments have collapsed into one repeated word. Twenty minutes later, you are in front of a mirror with a tape measure, trying to locate the ends of your own collarbones. You searched “frame mogged” because you wanted the phrase explained; now you are wondering whether your skeleton has already decided your place in the room.

The plain answer is that being frame mogged means another man's shoulders and upper torso make yours look smaller in a comparison, usually on camera. The internet makes that sound like a permanent genetic verdict. It is not. The bone is relatively narrow in its variation; the muscle, posture, clothes, camera angle and surrounding body shape do more of the visible work than the comments admit.

What does frame mogged mean?

To be frame mogged is to stand beside a man whose shoulder width and upper-body proportions make you look smaller, especially in a photo or video. “Mog” means visually overshadowing someone; “frame” narrows it from general appearance to skeletal shoulder spacing and the mass layered over it.

The format works because the contrast is immediate: two bodies share a frame, one silhouette projects farther, and comments turn the difference into a verdict. The comparison is real; claiming it reveals a man's total attractiveness goes beyond the evidence.

The joke format does not make the anxiety imaginary, but the anxiety is not a measurement instrument either.

What is your frame, anatomically?

Your frame is the bony upper-body base, especially the clavicles and the shoulder joints they help position. Deltoids sit on top of it: a narrow skeletal span can carry substantial visible shoulder mass, while a broad skeleton can look unimpressive without enough muscle, posture or presentation.

The clavicle links the sternum to the shoulder and helps determine joint spacing. It is also the last bone in the human body to complete fusion: it begins fusing in the early teens and completes medial epiphyseal fusion in the late twenties, according to Buckley and Clark's review.

How much do men's frames actually differ?

Men's skeletal shoulder breadth differs, but less than visible breadth across the deltoids. Calculated from the ANSUR II public data, the male sample of 4,082 shows a 4.6% coefficient of variation for biacromial breadth versus 6.4% across the deltoids.

These figures come from the ANSUR II public release, not every population. Still, the direction matters: the dimension men treat as an immutable visual sentence is the less variable of the two shoulder widths. Can you widen your frame?

You can widen the visible shoulder by adding lateral-deltoid muscle; you cannot lengthen a fused clavicle through exercise. In an eight-week study, lateral raises increased lateral deltoid thickness by roughly 3.3% to 4.6% per site, with dumbbells and cables producing similar results.

At the distal site, cable training went from 21.5 to 22.5 mm and dumbbells from 21.9 to 22.7 mm; at the proximal site, cable training went from 18.6 to 19.1 mm and dumbbells from 18.8 to 19.4 mm. The authors concluded that “Both dumbbell and cable lateral raises are similarly effective for increasing lateral deltoid muscle hypertrophy in resistance-trained lifters.” See the open-access study for detail.

As an inference, about 1 mm per side is roughly 2 mm of bideltoid breadth against a male SD of 32.5 mm: about 0.06 of a standard deviation per eight-week block. No study has directly measured bideltoid breadth change with training, so this translates thickness data rather than claiming the study measured a broader frame.

A training result is not a promise of a particular silhouette: starting structure, execution, recovery and body fat all affect what becomes visible.

Does frame actually decide anything?

Frame is one cue among several, not a stranger's entire read of you. The strongest relevant result also cuts against threshold-based framing: perceived upper-body strength was strongly tied to men's bodily attractiveness in rated torso photographs.

Sell, Lukaszewski and Townsley reported that estimates of physical strength accounted for over 70% of men's bodily attractiveness; adding height and leanness reached about 80% of the variance. The paper found “no evidence of a nonlinear effect; the strongest men were the most attractive in all samples.” On this axis, the result looks more like a ladder than a threshold.

The task matters. A shirtless torso photograph designed to expose bodily strength differs from a stranger reading a clothed man in a room. The first isolates a body cue; the second combines face, movement, clothing, posture, expression, context and personal preferences. Sell et al. is not refuted; it simply does not answer the second task.

Other findings point in different directions. Pazhoohi, Garza and Kingstone found taller men and men with larger shoulder-to-hip ratios more attractive, masculine and better in fighting ability. A separate interpersonal-space study found comfort distance increased with height, but “No effect was found for shoulder width, neither for male nor female participants.” Shoulder width can matter for one judgment and not another.

So pages about the Adonis index, the most attractive male body type or the height-attraction guide discuss particular signals, not a universal body blueprint. A taller or broader-looking man may register differently in a study stimulus without becoming automatically compelling in an encounter.

The ethics are simple. Frame is an appearance axis with almost no remedy, which is why fixating on it hurts. You can change body fat, training, posture, clothes and manner; not your collarbones. Put attention on what is movable, including posture and perceived height, and read about effect rather than ranking.

We cannot infer a stranger's full response from a shoulder measurement, and we should not pretend a study of bodies settles the meaning of a person.

The bottom line

Upper-body size matters a lot, but not in the way frame charts imply. Across three samples, raters' estimates of a man's physical strength accounted for more than 70 percent of the variance in his bodily attractiveness, and adding height and leanness took it to roughly 80 percent (Sell et al., 2017). Notably, that study found no threshold effect on this axis — the strongest men were rated most attractive throughout.
