Glasses statistics: how many men wear them, and what they change about how you read
Glasses statistics, plainly: 61.0% of US adults reported wearing glasses, while research finds the visual effect depends on frame style.

You are standing outside a bar, office, or first date, wondering whether the frames on your face are helping or quietly changing the impression before you speak. You search for statistics because style advice is full of confident claims and almost none of them tell you what was actually measured.
Here is the useful answer first: glasses are normal, not a visual disadvantage by default. In the best-controlled study here, glasses raised perceived intelligence and trustworthiness, while the attractiveness cost depended on frame design—especially full-rim frames—not on eyewear as a category.
The deeper point is the one worth remembering: people do not read a frame in isolation. They read the face, the frame, the expression, and the situation as one quick package. That is why a statistic can orient you, but cannot choose your best pair.

How many adults wear glasses?
Most American adults wear glasses. In the 2014-2015 National Health Interview Survey, 61.0% said yes, with men lower than women at 55.3% against 66.4%.
Age moves this number more than anything else: reported use climbed from 42.6% at ages 18-39 to 67.4% at ages 40-64 and 83.5% at ages 65-84, because presbyopia eventually takes near focus from almost everyone.
Caveat: these are self-reported answers from an older US survey, not a clinical acuity test.
How common is short-sightedness, and where is it going?
Short-sightedness is rising quickly, but the popular version of that fact is wrong. The projection is 49.8% of the world myopic by 2050, and myopia is only one reason people end up in frames.
The same modelling estimated 22.9% of the world was myopic in 2000, including 2.7% with high myopia, and 9.8% by 2050. Presbyopia, hyperopia and astigmatism send plenty of people to an optician who were never short-sighted.
The US trend is not subtle. Myopia at ages 12 to 54 rose from 25.0% in 1971-1972 to 41.6% in 1999-2004, and pooled child prevalence climbed from 24.32% to 35.81% between 1990 and 2023, with 39.80% projected for 2050.
Caveat: projections are models with differing thresholds, so do not read a forecast as a prediction about your eyes.

How many people wear contact lenses?
Contact lenses are a mainstream choice, not a niche escape from eyewear. The CDC estimate puts 40.9 million US adults, or 16.7%, in contacts, 93.0% in soft lenses, while another estimate puts the US total near 45 million. Among adolescents aged 12-17, 3.6 million (14.5%) wore them.
The risk numbers are blunter than the marketing. About 99% of wearers in that sample reported at least one infection-risk behaviour: 50.2% had slept in lenses, 84.9% had showered in them and 61.0% had swum in them.

Do glasses actually make you look smarter?
Yes, within limits. Glasses raise perceived intelligence and trustworthiness in rating studies and can lower rated attractiveness at the same time, depending on the frame. What changes is the inference people draw from your face, not your intelligence. Four experiments found that trade-off, and other studies linked glasses with intellectualism, competence and less forcefulness.
The courtroom version is far weaker than its headlines. One mock-juror vignette reported 44% guilty verdicts when the defendant wore glasses, against 56% without, but the author called it only moderately significant and an editor said coverage overstated it.
Caveat: these studies measure ratings in controlled setups, not how one person reacts to your frames on a date.
Do glasses make you look less attractive?
Not as a category, and this is where most style advice goes wrong. In the cleanest experiment, the same faces were rated less attractive and less likeable in full-rim glasses, while rimless glasses carried no penalty and raised trustworthiness. The variable is frame construction, not correction.
Our position is simple. A thick, high-contrast frame speaks before you do, while a lighter frame sits inside the structure of the face. They are different opening lines, not right and wrong answers.

Do blue-light glasses do anything?
For computer use, the honest answer is that blue-light lenses may do nothing for your eyes. Cochrane reviewed 17 randomised trials and found no clinically meaningful benefit for short-term visual fatigue in the usable trial, and no randomised evidence on macular health, contrast sensitivity, colour discrimination or glare.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology does not recommend them and points to the 20-20-20 rule instead. We would rather say that than sell you a filter: if your eyes ache after a screen day, change the habits.
Caveat: “not shown to help” is not the same thing as “proven harmful,” and the trials were limited and short.
What does it cost, and who goes without?
Cost turns this into an access question. WHO reported at least 2.2 billion people with vision impairment or blindness, including over 800 million who struggled because they lacked glasses. In the US, 93 million adults are at high risk for serious vision loss, yet only half saw an eye doctor in the preceding year.
Major vision problems could cost $373 billion by 2050, and laser surgery is not the clean escape it is sold as: one review reported $2000 ± $1000 per eye. “Ditch your glasses” is not universal advice.
Caveat: the cited spending figures are for Medicare beneficiaries, and prices and eligibility vary.
What we could not verify
Several popular numbers did not survive checking. We could not trace “about 75% of US adults need vision correction” to reproducible government data, and the closest plain-glasses measure we can stand behind is 61.0%. We found no credible percentage for “glasses make you smarter,” an IQ-point increase, or harmful blue light blocked.
The acquittal claim traces back to one small vignette with two model faces and students, hedged by its own author. And “half the world will need glasses by 2050” swaps myopia for all correction: the projection is 49.8% myopic, 9.8% high myopia.
