Someone tags you in a wedding photo taken from the side. You know your face from mirrors and front-facing cameras, but this unfamiliar angle feels like evidence against you. You zoom in and search “good side profile male” for an answer you can use today.
Direct answer: a good male profile is usually close to straight, with the forehead, nose base and chin near one vertical line and a clean chin-to-neck corner. It need not be mathematically perfect; slight chin retrusion is usually less noticeable than forums claim.
The useful question is not “What score does this profile deserve?” but “What effect does this angle create in a stranger?” A face forms an impression quickly, but not a universal ladder: it is a threshold you cross for one person and miss for another.

What is a good side profile for a man?
A good side profile for a man is generally straight rather than extremely convex or concave: forehead, subnasale and chin sit near one vertical line, while the jaw underside turns cleanly into the neck. That is a broad pattern, not a demand that every feature become small or ruler-straight.
In a study of 400 lay participants, the orthognathic profile was “the most preferred profile” for both sexes (Türkkahraman & Gökalp, 2004); a normal SNB angle of 78° also rated most attractive (Johnston et al., 2005). Czarnecki, Nanda and Currier found extremely recessive chins and excessively convex faces rated worst; their 545 raters were dental professionals, not the public. These findings support balance, not a magic template.
Which parts of a profile do people actually notice?
People notice the gross relationship between chin, lips, nose and neck before a tiny measurement. The chin-to-neck corner defines the lower silhouette; a weak jawline can blur it, while dramatic projection can look forced.
In altered profile silhouettes, chin movement up to 4 mm was essentially unnoticeable; surgery was wanted beyond 6 mm forward but only beyond 10 mm back. The asymmetry matters: in a separate panel, chin protrusion was less attractive than retrusion and surgery was desired more often for projecting examples. The internet’s reflex to add more jaw is not supported by the simplest reading of the data.
A stripped silhouette is good at testing whether millimetres matter; it cannot reproduce eyes, skin, hair, expression or movement.
What are the 'ideal' angles, and where do the numbers come from?
“Ideal” angles come from small rater panels, selected examples and surgical convention. Treat them as ranges describing what a panel accepted, not personal targets or proof your face needs correction.

Does a good profile need a big jaw or a small nose?
No. A good side profile is a relationship, not individually maximised parts. Czarnecki’s profiles show more lip protrusion could be acceptable with a large nose or chin because the eye reads the package together.
That makes “small nose” a poor universal rule. A prominent nose can work with the face; see whether a big nose is attractive on a man and Roman noses in men. A large jaw cannot rescue every imbalance.
Counter-evidence to “straighter is always better”: Ghorbanyjavadpour and Rakhshan used 70 normal-bite silhouettes and only 10 lay raters; within that range, slightly more convex profiles and protruding chins might improve attractiveness. Interesting, not a new blueprint.
How much does the profile matter compared with the front?
The profile is the weakest single view, not irrelevant. In Shafiee’s clinician rankings, smiling photographs predicted overall ranking best at r = 0.93; profile photographs least at r = 0.76. A 2026 study found profile-to-full-face correlations from r = 0.62 to 0.84 across rater groups.
Take it seriously, but do not let one frozen angle overrule your presence: people meet you turning, speaking and making expressions, often at three-quarter angles. These studies do not measure how a moving man is judged in person.
The profile may be the angle that alarms you most because it is unfamiliar, not because it dominates every stranger’s impression.
How do you check your own side profile honestly?
Use a repeatable photograph before a ruler: separate structure from camera height, head position and pose, then decide whether you need an angle audit or a better read of the image.
- Use another person: Have someone shoot you from about 2 metres, not with a stretched selfie.
- Set the camera: Ear height, head level, eyes on the horizon.
- Relax: Teeth lightly together; lips natural.
- Do not jut: Keep the head over the neck. Neck extension or head protrusion can improve jawline definition in a photograph, as Sommer and Mendelsohn’s positioning study showed.

What if yours is outside the band?
First identify the layer: bone, soft tissue or posture. A noticeably recessed or projecting jaw may warrant an orthodontist’s opinion when bite, chewing, breathing or pain is involved; a lateral X-ray can assess anatomy a photograph cannot.

No — past a point it makes it worse. Raters wanted surgery for chin protrusion beyond 6 mm but for retrusion only beyond 10 mm (Naini et al., 2012), and a second study states plainly that 'Chin protrusion was less attractive than retrusion'. Does the side profile matter as much as the front?

When clinicians ranked patients from three views, smiling frontal photos predicted the overall ranking best (r = 0.93) and profile photos least (r = 0.76) (Shafiee et al., 2008). Profile and whole-face ratings correlate, at r = 0.62 to 0.84 in a 2026 study, but they are not the same judgment — and nobody meets you in static profile.
