Male face measurements: real percentiles from 4,082 measured men

Male face measurements from 4,082 ANSUR II men: real cheekbone-width percentiles, face height, head size, and what fWHR gets wrong.

You have a screenshot open, a forum telling you that your face is too narrow, and a ruler that cannot quite find the landmarks people keep naming. You are not really searching for a number. You are trying to work out whether one visible feature is quietly deciding how strangers read you.

Here is the useful answer first: the average male cheekbone width in our analysis of 4,082 ANSUR II men is 142.6 mm, with a 5th-to-95th percentile range of 133–153 mm. Raw face width separates men and women strongly; ratios are much less decisive.

These are measurements, not a beauty verdict. A face can be read as attractive through several interacting signals, and a millimetre is not a personality. The point of a real percentile is to replace vague internet categories with a scale that has a known method and known limits.

How wide is the average man's face?

The average male face is 142.6 mm wide at the cheekbones, measured as bizygomatic breadth. ANSUR II rounds that mean to 14.26 cm, with a male median of 14.30 cm, 13.30 cm at the 5th percentile, and 15.30 cm at the 95th.

The landmark is the maximum breadth between the left and right zygion, taken on a live face with a spreading caliper rather than from a photograph, where tilt and lens distortion change apparent width. The computed standard deviation is 6.2 mm, so a 1–2 mm difference sits inside the report's own error, and zygomatic bones and attractiveness explains why cheekbone width is not jaw width.

Caveat: these percentiles describe this sample, not a universal male template.

How tall is the average man's face?

The average male menton-sellion length is 122.6 mm, from the bony chin point to the sellion at the nose bridge, with a 5th-to-95th percentile range of 112–134 mm.

This is not “midface length” in the loose online sense: ANSUR II used a sliding caliper with the teeth lightly occluded. The male median is 12.30 cm, our computed standard deviation 6.7 mm, the technical error of measurement 1.65 mm, and the reliability coefficient 93.1% — below the 97.0% recorded for bizygomatic breadth. Caveat: a caliper landmark is a definition, not a description of how a face looks in conversation.

What are the percentiles for every head and face measure?

These seven measures give scale without letting one ratio define masculinity.

Our computed male means include 57.44 cm head circumference, 6.40 cm interpupillary breadth, and 12.26 cm menton-sellion length, with medians of 57.40 cm, 6.40 cm, and 12.30 cm. Circumference was taped just above the eyebrow ridges, so it is a head figure, not a face-width substitute.

Inter-observer error was 1.2 mm for bizygomatic breadth, 1.7 mm for menton-sellion length, 1.8 mm for head circumference, and 0.8 mm for interpupillary breadth, which caps how finely any of this can be read. Facial thirds explains why part-by-part comparisons mislead.

Caveat: head circumference is especially sensitive to protocol.

Is a wider face really the male face?

Yes, and here the forum understates the difference. Only 7.2% of men are narrower than the female median of 134 mm, and Caton and Dixson reported an effect size of d = 1.39, still d = 1.07 after adjusting for 92 other anatomical measurements in the same 6,068-person release.

The internet keeps asking a proportion question because it wants a single label; the data answer a better one. Men's faces aren't wider. They're bigger. The separation sits in the raw dimension, not in a ratio, and width is still one input among expression, grooming, skin, and presentation.

Caveat: a group difference does not diagnose an individual.

What about fWHR, the ratio the forums argue about?

fWHR is not a universal male-face ratio. It is a photograph-based quotient whose value shifts with the height denominator, body mass, landmarking, and image conditions.

The soft-tissue version divides bizygomatic width by upper-lip-to-brow height, and Carré and McCormick defined it from photographs of 88 undergraduates, 37 of them men.

The denominator flip in the last row is load-bearing: same release, same people, opposite sex difference.

Caveat: fWHR may still shape how a face is read, but that is not a universal sex marker.

Does face width change with age?

Mean bizygomatic breadth rises from 140.0 mm among men under 20 to 144.0 mm among men 50 and over, with the bands between filled in below. The sample's computed mean age is 30.2 years, across a span of 17 to 58.

This is a cross-section: different people at one moment, not the same men followed through life. “Your face will definitely widen with age” is therefore too strong, because weight, soft tissue, and posture change the impression without moving the landmark.

Caveat: the older bands hold fewer men, so treat the direction as a clue, not a forecast.

Who was measured, and who wasn't?

These are U.S. Army men, not civilians: 4,082 men and 1,986 women, in a file Penn State warns does not approximate the U.S. civilian population. It is 69.01% White, 15.73% Black, and 10.78% Hispanic against Army shares of 68.04%, 15.49%, and 10.63%, and it is young, with 10.34% aged 17–20, 28.05% aged 21–25, and only 15.68% over 41.

NIOSH gives the civilian cross-check: 3,997 people at 41 sites in 8 states, with weighted male means of 143.5 mm bizygomatic breadth, 575.7 mm head circumference, 64.5 mm interpupillary distance, and 122.7 mm menton-sellion length. A National Academies review put that sample at 3,998 and criticised ill-defined selection and limited geography, so neither source is the true American face.

Caveat: NHANES does not rescue the gap; its adult protocol has no facial dimensions, only head circumference from birth through 6 months.

What we could not verify

We could not trace these claims to a primary source, so we list the gap instead of repeating them.

  • “The ideal face is exactly five eye-widths wide.” The rule of fifths traces to Renaissance canons, not a population study, and 0% of 103 southern Chinese adults conformed to the orbital canon.
  • “A perfect face divides into three equal thirds.” Chinese, Caucasian, African American, and Saudi samples all report unequal thirds.
  • Bizygomatic figures attributed to Farkas et al. (2005). The citation checks out, but the tables are paywalled and we will not print a figure we cannot inspect.
  • “An fWHR above about 2.0 means high testosterone.” No primary source, and the male evidence reports no significant testosterone relationship.
  • A single universal adult interpupillary distance. A review of 243 studies and 128,100 subjects reports pooled means from 59.5 mm to 69.9 mm.

The bottom line

The average male cheekbone width is 142.6 mm, and the ordinary range around it is broad. Raw width separates the sexes far more clearly than fWHR does.
