First impression psychology: a glossary of every effect, and what each study actually found
Halo effect, thin slicing, averageness and the cheerleader effect: 24 first-impression terms, each with the paper it came from and the claim it cannot support.

You are halfway through a draft when an editor asks for the actual source behind “people decide about your face in a tenth of a second.” You search, open three listicles, and find three citations pointing back to each other.
Key numbers
- 100 ms: Unfamiliar-face judgments after a 100-ms exposure correlated with no-time-limit judgments in five experiments. Willis and Todorov found longer exposure raised confidence, not correlations.
- Eleven meta-analyses: Langlois and colleagues found within- and across-culture agreement about whole-face attractiveness. The review does not support larger counts repeated online.
- 37 cultures, approximately 10,047 participants: Buss reported a cross-cultural mate-preference study. The study does not prove universal preferences.
- Two dimensions: Oosterhof and Todorov found judgments reduce to valence or trustworthiness and dominance. Their PNAS paper is not a complete theory of attraction.

Speed and agreement: how fast the judgment happens
First impression window — Measured Judgment can form after a 100-ms exposure; Willis and Todorov’s five experiments do not license “the first glance is always correct.”
Thin slicing — Measured Brief samples predicted outcomes better than chance, not character.
Zero-acquaintance judgment — Measured Evaluation before meaningful interaction or familiarity; see the first-impression window.
Valence-dominance model — Measured Spontaneous judgments organize around valence or trustworthiness and dominance.
Caveat: a fast, shared response can be psychologically real while still being biased, incomplete, or wrong about the individual.

Physical attractiveness stereotype, “what is beautiful is good” — Measured Attractiveness spills into traits; Eagly found strongest effects for social competence, weaker or absent for integrity and concern for others.
Behavioral confirmation / self-fulfilling prophecy — Measured Expectations alter behavior and invite confirmation; feedback is not proof.
Attractiveness halo in hiring — Inflated Spillover, not a universal hiring premium or fixed career outcome.
Caveat: “good-looking people are not what we think” is the needed correction. Feingold’s review found that assumptions substantially outrun actual differences.

What makes a face read as attractive
Averageness effect — Measured Averaged composites beat most component faces; Langlois and Roggman meant mathematical average, not mediocre-looking.
Symmetry preference — Measured Rhodes reviews it alongside averageness and sexual dimorphism; explanations are contested; see our symmetry explainer.
Sexual dimorphism — Measured Sex-typical patterning is one cue, not a universal preference.
Consensus / cross-cultural agreement — Measured Strong within- and across-culture agreement about whole-face attractiveness, not identical taste.
Caveat: agreement about an appearance is not a verdict on a person’s value. If appearance anxiety is pulling you toward obsessive comparison, use these findings to understand perception, then return to the controllable parts of presentation and social life.
Context effects: the same face, a different verdict
Contrast effect — Measured Attractive images can lower average-face ratings; not a permanent change or universal prediction.
Cheerleader effect — Measured Faces can seem more attractive in groups; no rescue guarantee.
Mere exposure effect — Measured Repetition can increase liking; familiarity is not compatibility, and repetition cannot manufacture consent or interest.
Own-race bias / cross-race effect — Measured A memory-accuracy finding, not racial ranking or attractiveness.
Primacy effect — Measured Earlier information shapes impressions; not irreversible destiny.
Central traits — Measured Some traits reorganize surrounding information; no universal list exists.
Pratfall effect — Measured A blunder can help someone already seen as highly competent; competence comes first.
Caveat: context effects are why a profile photo, a hallway encounter, and a conversation should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
Terms that got inflated on the way to you
“7-38-55” / the Mehrabian numbers — Inflated The claim says 7%, 38%, and 55%; the studies tested conflicting feelings, not communication in general.
“You have seven seconds to make a first impression” — Folk No primary source found. The number shifts between three, seven, eleven, and thirty seconds; research measures milliseconds, not a universal deadline.
“Ninety-three percent of communication is non-verbal” — Folk A generalized Mehrabian claim, not all communication or first impressions. See our attractiveness myths fact-check.
Power posing — Inflated Initial hormonal and risk-tolerance effects did not replicate; self-reported power did.

What none of this can tell you about your own face
A glossary explains mechanisms; it cannot infer your romantic future from a selfie or turn a study into a diagnosis.
“People form impressions quickly” does not mean one photograph traps you. Clothing, expression, grooming, lighting, posture, and situation matter; no single adjustment guarantees attraction.
Real World Appeal reports use a 70-155 perception axis and model a non-linear threshold.
