You are thirty seconds from a call with someone you like. You tap FaceTime, catch the little preview window, and suddenly your nose looks huge, your jaw has vanished, and one eye seems to belong to a different man.

The conclusion you are drawing from it is usually wrong.

Why do I look ugly on FaceTime?

Because FaceTime films you with a wide-angle lens from arm’s length, usually from below and lit by a screen — a combination that widens your nose, rounds your face, and flattens your features.

The technical term is distortion in optics: the closer the lens, the more the nearest features grow relative to features farther away. Your nose and chin move toward the camera; your ears and jaw sit farther back.

Ward et al. compared a photo taken about 12 inches from the face with one taken from 5 feet. The nasal base appeared roughly 30% wider at the short distance, while the nasal tip appeared roughly 7% wider.

Distortion explains a lot, not everything. Bad light, a tired expression, dehydration, or an unflattering moment can still show up; the point is to stop treating one distorted frame as your identity.

Why do I look inverted on FaceTime?

Because the self-view preview is usually mirrored, like a bathroom mirror, while the person on the other end sees your face the right way round.

You have spent years meeting your reflection. The un-mirrored arrangement is less familiar to you, even though it is the version friends and strangers are accustomed to seeing. Research by Mita, Dermer, and Knight found that people preferred their mirror image, while friends preferred the true image.

The mere-exposure effect describes how repeated exposure can make something feel more comfortable or appealing.

Is how you look on FaceTime accurate?

No. It is a real image of your face under unusually bad conditions, not a measurement of how you look to someone sitting across a table.

Treating that compound image as “the truth” is like judging your voice from a recording made with your mouth against a microphone.

People can form trait impressions from a face in about 100 ms, according to Willis and Todorov, but a video call also includes voice, timing, expression, attention, and how you make the other person feel.

FaceTime is still part of someone’s experience of you, so presentation matters. It just cannot tell you how you look in every real-world setting, and it is especially poor evidence for deciding to alter your face.

How do you look better on FaceTime?

Move the camera farther away and up to eye level, put soft light in front of you, frame head and shoulders, then hide your own tile once you have checked it. This physical setup usually beats filters, a new skincare routine, or panic-buying equipment.

  1. Distance — Prop the phone or laptop farther away than arm’s length and lean back rather than leaning into the camera. The longer Ward et al. distance produced a far more proportionate nose than the close setup.
  2. Height — Put the lens at eye level or slightly above. Stack books under the laptop if necessary. Never hold the phone at your chest unless you want the camera looking up your nose and carving a chin shadow.

  4. Framing — Show your head and upper shoulders with a little space above your head.
  5. Hide self-view after checking — Watching yourself keeps attention on flaws. The goal is not to manufacture a different face; it is to remove the camera’s most misleading choices.

A better setup will not erase every insecurity or make every call flattering. It gives you a fairer image, which is the minimum standard you should demand before making a judgment about yourself.

What if the camera has you thinking about changing your face?

Pause. Dermatologists started seeing so many people booking treatments over their video image that the pattern was framed as “Zoom dysmorphia,” even though the image driving those decisions is often distorted.

Rice, Graber, and Kourosh coined that framing in 2020. In a later survey, providers reported patient concerns about upper-face wrinkles (77%), dark circles under the eyes (64.4%), and neck sagging (50%).

The healthy move is to name the looksmaxxing and over-scrutiny spiral: you see a bad angle, search for a diagnosis, inspect another angle, and start treating normal variation as a defect. Step out of that loop. Ask a better question: “What impression am I giving in normal conditions, and what small controllable change would help?”
