You have two photos of the same face, taken on the same afternoon. In one, you look recognisably like yourself; in the other, your nose has moved forward, your ears have nearly disappeared, and your forehead seems to be trying a new career. Nothing about your face changed. The best focal length for portraits is usually 85mm on full frame, but the decisive variable is camera-to-face distance: stand at least 1.5–2 metres away, then choose the lens that fills the frame. A first impression is a fast perceptual read, not a score, and a close camera can quietly change that read before anyone evaluates your expression, clothes or personality.

The best focal length for portraits is 85mm on a full-frame camera for a head-and-shoulders frame. Use roughly 135mm equivalent for a tighter headshot, 85mm for head-and-shoulders, and 50mm for waist-up or environmental portraits; on APS-C, an approximately 56mm lens gives the 85mm look, while Micro Four Thirds needs about 42mm.

Now the rule that matters more than the lens: shoot from at least 1.5 to 2 metres away and choose the focal length that fills the frame. That distance reduces the proportionate difference between the nose and ears, so the face reads more like the person standing in front of you.

Why does distance change your face, and not the lens?

Distance changes the face because perspective depends on the ratio between near features, such as the nose, and farther features, such as the ears. Move close and the nose is proportionally much nearer to the camera; step back and that ratio flattens, while the lens merely changes how much of the scene fits in the frame.

“Wide-angle distortion” is therefore usually a distance problem wearing a lens costume. A wide lens forces you to stand closer to fill the frame, and that closeness creates exaggerated perspective. A longer lens lets you stand farther away, preserving more familiar proportions.

Does the focal length actually change how people judge you?

The focal length changes social judgment indirectly by changing the distance used to make the photograph. Bryan, Perona and Adolphs (2012) found that close-range photographs received lower ratings of trustworthiness, competence and attractiveness, and produced lower investments in an economic trust game, even when image size, expression and lighting were held constant.

Focal length is not merely an aesthetic preference when it determines camera distance; it becomes a social-judgment variable.

Willis and Todorov (2006) showed that trait judgments begin at 100 milliseconds, while Ambady and Rosenthal (1992) found that brief behavioural slices could predict interpersonal outcomes.

Check the lighting and angle, because light changes what the face communicates, then check whether the camera was close enough to change the geometry.

This research does not prove that every viewer reacts identically to every photograph. It does show that interpersonal distance can influence judgments under controlled conditions, which is enough to make distance worth controlling.

50mm vs 85mm vs 135mm: which one for what

For a face-focused portrait, 85mm is the most reliable default because it balances working distance, facial perspective and manageable framing. A 50mm is more versatile for waist-up images, while 135mm is excellent for tight headshots when you have enough room; 24–35mm belongs mainly to environmental compositions.

What about your phone?

A phone’s main camera is usually about a 24–26mm full-frame equivalent, and its front camera is wider still. An arm’s-length selfie is therefore one of the least reliable ways to photograph a face: the camera is close, so the nose becomes relatively prominent and the outer features recede.

Use the back camera, select the 2x or 3x telephoto option if your phone has one, and have someone stand two to three metres away. If the phone has no real telephoto camera, move it farther away and crop later.

The mistake that survives good gear

The mistake is buying an 85mm lens and then stepping close to fill the frame, which throws away the entire benefit of the focal length. Distance comes first and focal length second: decide where the camera should stand, then choose the lens that gives you the composition.
