Portrait photography terms: the glossary for people who only want better photos of themselves
Focal length, perspective distortion, catchlights and key light, each defined by what it does to a face, with the measured selfie-distortion figures.

You take a photo in the elevator, dislike it, then take another outside a few minutes later. In one, your nose seems to lead the face. In the other, your jaw looks cleaner and your eyes sit differently. You decide one picture must be the truth.
That conclusion is usually wrong. The camera has changed the projection, the light, or the distance, and your face is being translated rather than measured. This glossary explains portrait terms from the point of view of the person in the frame: what the setting does to your face, and why the mirror is not a reliable referee.
Camera distance is a face-shape setting: it changes geometry; flattering is not “the real you.”

Distance and lens terms (the ones that change your face)
- Focal length — view-width setting; longer means more distance.
- Field of view — scene area; wide invites closeness.
- Perspective distortion — distance-based size change; near parts enlarge.
- Working distance — camera-subject space; adjustable setting.
- Crop factor — sensor-format framing comparison; perspective unchanged.
- Compression — flatter long-lens look; distance works.
- Wide-angle — broad view, such as a 24 mm or 28 mm equivalent; close, it enlarges the center.

Caveat: a farther camera position can look calmer without being more “truthful.” People see you at different distances, and every distance is a real view.

The measured numbers on selfie distance
Ward, Ward, Fried, and Paskhover built a mathematical model comparing photographs at different distances with an orthographic projection. At 12 inches, with bizygomatic breadth held constant, perceived nasal size increased by 30% in males and 29% in females. At 5 feet, a standard portrait distance, there was essentially no difference in perceived size.
With nasal breadth held constant, intercrural distance was 7% greater at 12 inches. Bryan, Perona, and Adolphs found distance-based perspective distortion changed social judgments of the same face.
Caveat: these findings do not identify a universally correct portrait distance, and they do not tell you how every person will react to every image.
Light terms (the ones that change your skin and your bones)
- Key light — main source; direction sets shape and shadows.
- Fill — reduces key shadows; usually softens the face.
- Rim or hair light — behind-light separating head/hair; outline, not structure.
- Catchlight — eye reflection; alertness and connection.
- Hard light — small, direct source; defined shadows emphasize texture.
- Soft light — large source wrapping the face; gentler transitions.
- Size relative to subject — source size controls softness.
- Direction — arrival angle; overhead deepens sockets, camera-level reduces effect.
- Golden hour — warm low-angle light near sunrise/sunset; warmer skin, longer shadows.
- Overcast — cloud-filtered broad source; usually soft, even shadows.
- Color temperature — warm or cool character; biases skin amber or blue.
- White balance — camera correction; poor settings make skin orange, gray, or cold.

Caveat: “soft” is not automatically better. A sharper shadow can suit a face and a purpose; the useful question is what the image is trying to communicate.
Camera and file terms you will actually meet
- Aperture and depth of field — opening; sharp range; shallow depth isolates eyes.
- Bokeh — out-of-focus appearance; background mood, not face geometry.
- Shutter speed and motion blur — recording duration; slow movement smears eyes, hair, expression.
- ISO and noise — amplification in limited light; higher settings can grain skin.
- Exposure compensation — brightness adjustment; rescues a face against a bright background.
- Dynamic range — retained bright and dark detail.
- JPEG processing and computational photography — sharpening, contrast, noise reduction, merging; changes texture and edges.
- Beauty smoothing — software reduction of skin texture and facial detail; cleaner, but less like the person.
- Mirror-image preview versus saved file — preview is mirrored on most phones; saved files usually are not; selfies can look wrong to you and normal to others.

Caveat: phone processing varies, so the same term can produce different results across devices. The face-shape lesson still holds: processing cannot undo every perspective choice.
Pose and framing terms
- Headroom — space above the head; too much looks small, too little cramped.
- Rule of thirds — grid-based placement guide; a framing choice, not an attractiveness law.
- Three-quarter view — partly turned face; shows depth and clarifies jaw-cheek relationships.
- Short lighting versus broad lighting — short lights the far side and can slim; broad lights the near side and can look open.
- Chin forward and down — small reach plus downward angle; defines the jaw, but overdoing it looks forced.
- Eye line — gaze destination; the lens creates connection, beside it feels less intense.
- Shoulder angle — turned shoulders add depth and avoid an identity-card pose.

Caveat: a pose that looks natural on one person can look artificial on another. Your job is to reduce distractions, not perform a borrowed identity.
Which of these actually change how strangers read you
Our position is blunt: distance and light direction do most work; the rest is taste, workflow, or cleanup.
Distance changes facial geometry; light direction changes legible planes and textures before bokeh, grid placement, or JPEG. Willis and Todorov found that judgments after a 100 ms exposure correlated highly with judgments made with no time limit, so the first visual read deserves attention.
Do not chase a manufactured “perfect” face. Langlois and colleagues reviewed eleven meta-analyses and found strong agreement about attractiveness while judging the face as a whole.
