Jawline rating: what AI jawline checkers measure, and how to read yours

Bathroom light off. Your phone torch is above your head, chin forward, and the jaw looks carved. You upload it, then this morning's photo; the numbers diverge, and you want to know which is your jaw.
Neither number is your bone. A jawline rating reads bone, fat and light together, compressing them into a score. Use the check that explains what changed, not one treating a selfie as an X-ray.

What is a jawline rating?
A jawline rating is an AI estimate of lower-face definition and angularity in one photo, combining visible angle, jaw width, chin position, symmetry, lower-face proportion and jaw–neck separation. It rates the image, not bone. The gonial angle is the mandible's back-corner angle; see this gonial angle reference. A jaw-only check can still be useful when you hold the photo conditions steady; the mistake is asking it to answer an anatomical question it cannot see.
What do jawline checkers actually measure?
Most checkers read front-photo geometry: visible angle, jaw/cheekbone width, symmetry and lower-face proportion; one uses a general-purpose vision model. They interpret pixels, not a mandible scan. The Face Report weights jaw angle 45%, visible jaw width 30%, symmetry 15% and lower face 10%. It says, “That anatomical measurement is not directly visible in an ordinary frontal selfie,” and that its score is not an attractiveness rating, diagnosis or population percentile. Lookmax Analyzer calls its result “a front-view geometry estimate—not an X-ray, a true side-profile measurement, or a medical assessment.” just build things calls it “feedback on the photo, not a verdict on your face.”
MOGGED says “Sharper (~120-125°) = more masculine” and gives an “Ideal ~92-94%” jaw-to-cheekbone width without sourcing either claim. Its front-facing-photo caveat and view that the verdict is more stable than the exact 0–100 number are closer to the truth.

Is a 120 degree jawline good?
Yes. 120° sits inside measured adult ranges and is a little sharper than some male averages, but no scientifically established gold standard exists. We found no peer-reviewed source for a 115–120° male ideal; the answer depends on anatomy, preference or a front-camera impression.
CBCT measurements of 141 adults found mean right gonial angles of 125.68° in men and 128.66° in women, with a spread of about 5°: the study is here. Other lateral X-ray means were around 122° in men and 125° in women; the angle identified sex at most 60.7% of the time. Another study found no correlation between gonial angle and gender.
Mommaerts writes, “The ideal male jaw angle has not been established.” Its preference survey found 130° in profile, more obtuse than the forum ideal often repeated online. Preference and measurement differ; our ideal gonial angle explainer goes deeper without making one study a prescription.
The strongest counterpoint is that preference data still tells us something about what people notice; it just cannot turn one angle into a pass-fail rule.
Can a selfie measure your jaw at all?
A selfie can roughly compare visible width and definition if controlled, but not reliably measure gonial angle frontally: it is defined on bone in side view, while camera geometry changes before an algorithm interprets it. A comparison of ten facial dimensions found significant differences in bizygomatic and bigonial breadth—the cheekbone and jaw widths used in a jaw-to-cheekbone ratio: read the study. A standardised side-profile photo can approximate gonial angle under a homogeneous protocol; an arm's-length phone is not that protocol.
A mathematical model found that a 12-inch selfie enlarges the nose by 30% in men and 29% in women versus an orthographic projection, while a photo from 5 feet shows essentially no difference: the model is here. Applying this to the jaw is our inference: the face centre grows relative to the edges. The Face Report says its score begins to move around 2° of yaw or 3° of pitch.
A controlled profile photograph can be repeatable, so “a photograph is useless” goes too far; the honest limit is that a casual selfie is not a controlled profile measurement.
How do you check your own jawline in five minutes?
Use repeatable photos and compare the spread, not the flattering frame, to identify whether face, camera or light changed.
- Set the phone back: Prop it at 1.5 metres or more, lens around chin-to-nose height; use a timer or person, not an arm-length selfie.
- Use plain light: Front-side window light, not hard downlight; this photo lighting and angle guide explains why.
- Relax the face: Neutral expression, teeth lightly together, chin level, neck unstrained; do not push the jaw forward.

- Repeat later: Retake them another day in similar conditions and read the spread.

What moves a jawline read, and what doesn't?
Leanness and light change the visible read; gum chewing did not change mandibular shape. Beard lines outline the jaw, posture exposes or hides the neck, and sharper appearance need not mean changed bone. Bone structure needs an orthodontist or surgeon.
Mogilski and Welling found eyebrow thickness and jawbone prominence more salient than cheekbone prominence and eye size, and masculinised jaw prominence more attractive on male faces; effects were small to moderate: their study. Coetzee, Perrett and Stephen found facial adiposity predicts perceived health and attractiveness; connecting that to jawline definition is our inference.

A jaw score is easy to chase because light moves it; reshooting trains the photo, not the jaw. Use a consistent setup, then stop refreshing.
The bottom line
A jawline rating can compare controlled photos, but cannot reveal the hidden gonial angle from a casual selfie or prove one number universally attractive. 120° is within adult ranges, not a magic target. Honest tools show their limits.
Keep three words: bone, fat, light. A front selfie cannot show bone; fat and light change. What is a jawline rating?
A jawline rating is a score, usually from an AI tool reading one selfie, for how defined and angular your lower face looks. Depending on the tool it blends an estimated jaw angle, jaw width against cheekbone width, chin position, symmetry and how cleanly the jaw separates from the neck. It is a rating of a photograph. The most careful tool in the category says its score 'is not an attractiveness rating, diagnosis, or population percentile'.
Is a 120 degree jawline good?
Yes — 120° sits inside the normal measured adult range, a little on the sharper side of the male average. CT measurements of 141 adults found a mean gonial angle of 125.68° in men and 128.66° in women, with a spread of about 5° (Dogan et al., 2025). Can an app measure my gonial angle from a selfie?
Not from a front-facing selfie. The gonial angle is defined on bone in side view. One tool that ranks for this search says so itself: 'That anatomical measurement is not directly visible in an ordinary frontal selfie.' A standardised side-profile photograph can approximate it under a strict protocol (Mehta et al., 2017), which is not what a phone held at arm's length produces.
Are jawline rating apps free?
Some are free in the browser and some are subscriptions. Is your jawline 100% genetic?
The bone largely is; the jawline you see is not. Perceived facial fatness 'significantly predicts perceived health and attractiveness' (Coetzee et al., 2009), and under-chin fullness changes with weight.
