A group photo lands in the chat. You zoom in on yourself, then on the friend beside you, then open a new tab and type “mog check.” The page promises a verdict before you have time to think about the lighting, the lens, or the fact that your friend is six inches closer to the camera.

Here is the direct answer: run a checker if you want a quick geometry read, but do not mistake it for a verdict on how you come across. Most mog tools compare one image with a fixed template. That is a narrower question than the one you actually care about.

What is a mog check?

A mog check scans a face photo or live camera image and returns a number, tier, or both. Most tools turn whether you visibly outshine someone into reference resemblance or facial ratios.

“Mog” is internet slang. Wiktionary’s entry places it on fitness forums and imageboards around 2016 and says it was popularized around 2021; Know Your Meme traces it to AMOG, “alpha male of the group.” NBC News defines it as visibly outshining someone.

What do mog checkers actually measure?

MogTracker compares 16 facial proportions with a reference, then produces a harmony score and PSL tier; mog.fyi publishes seven weighted cues—symmetry, harmony, jaw, midface, canthal tilt, cheek, and eye shape.

MogTracker’s methodology page says it measures geometric conformity to a fixed reference and does not measure attractiveness. mog.fyi calls itself a live MediaPipe face-scoring demo with local webcam analysis; its weights echo spectator discussion, not a scientific theory of beauty.

That is narrower than “mog” suggests: a template match, not a room. It places a photo against a reference, not an in-person impression.

A geometry check can still be useful if geometry is your question; the mistake is promoting that answer into a claim about your whole presence.

Which mog check tools are out there, and what do they cost?

“Free” can mean free to open, not keep using. We read public pages, store listings, and public code on 19 September 2026; we did not create accounts or upload photos to third-party tools.

The looksmaxxingai.app page says “5 Credit Required”; its pricing page says credits expire after 1 month and renew monthly until cancelled. Are mog scores accurate?

Scores can be consistent against their rules without measuring real-world effect. MogTracker reports the same person scoring 87–96 by photograph and says its system does not measure attractiveness.

In the 2024 study by Goshtasbi, Hakimi, and Wong, five free rating websites assessed 40 AI-generated adult white female faces and 24 otolaryngology residents rated them. The correlation was r = 0.84; websites scored higher: 6.9 ± 0.9 versus 5.0 ± 1.8. That shows agreement plus leniency, not validation of any mog checker.

The study did not test male faces, the listed tools, or real-life reactions; controlled-image agreement can coexist with poor room prediction. See is mogged accurate? and why face rating apps give different scores.

The study does not validate any named mog checker, and its faces were AI-generated female faces, so the comparison is informative but narrow.

Where does your photo go?

There are three answers: the photo may stay in your browser, go to a server with a deletion window, or enter a public leaderboard flow. Read the privacy wording and, where relevant, public code; an upload button alone tells you little.

MogTracker says face detection runs entirely in your browser, with no image, video, or measurement leaving your device; mog.fyi describes local webcam analysis. The looksmaxxingai.app homepage says, “Your photo never leaves your device,” while its privacy policy says uploaded images are automatically deleted within 7 days after creation. Both statements come from the site.

For mogscan.app, public code served on 19 September 2026 uploads the scanned image to a storage bucket named “scan-images.” Its “Global Leaderboard” builds image links with a public-URL call; code contains “Failed to save to leaderboard,” and we found no consent wording beside it. It also contains “Model refused, using fallback scoring.” We did not upload anything.

Your 30-second check is simple:

1. Policy: Find the privacy policy before selecting a photo.
2. Processing: Look for “runs in your browser” or “local webcam analysis.”
3. Visibility: Look for a leaderboard or public image links.

How do you run a mog check that means something?

Control the photo: use the same window light, camera at eye level, neutral face, and phone at least 1.5 metres away rather than at arm’s length. Take three photos on different days and read the spread, not the best number.

Use this protocol:

1. Light: Even window light; avoid dramatic overhead shadows.
2. Distance: Phone at least 1.5 metres away; near features can be exaggerated.
3. Expression: Stay neutral; repeat the setup instead of chasing a flattering pose.
4. Spread: Compare three different days; range beats a single peak.

Should you run one at all?

Yes, for curiosity or a controlled check of facial geometry; no, as a daily habit or identity referendum.

We built a free perception test, so we are not neutral. It answers a different question from a mog checker: not “how close is this photo to a template?” but “how does this read to a stranger?” It has not been validated against real-world outcomes, and its percentile figures are model estimates.

Age matters. Two apps carry age ratings of 4+ and Everyone while collecting face photos, and one web tool says only that it is not intended for under-13s. The bottom line

A mog check answers a small question about one image against a fixed reference. It cannot settle whether you outshine someone in a room, with distance, movement, clothing, expression, and another person’s threshold for interest.
