An FFMI between 20 and 22 usually represents one to three years of consistent training, sometimes less with strong genetics. At 21 you carry clearly more muscle than the untrained baseline — ahead of the median gym member, still a long way from the natural ceiling. Two cautions on reading the number: shorter men score slightly high on raw FFMI, which is exactly why the height-normalized version exists, and a body-fat estimate that is off by three points moves the result by nearly a full point.
What it actually does to the first-glance physique read
This is the first band where a plain T-shirt does some of the talking. Shoulder caps and chest start breaking the fabric line, and at distance the silhouette flips from average to athletic. The body-fat interaction is at its most brutal right here, though: FFMI 21 at 23% body fat reads stocky and soft, while the identical number at 13% reads obviously trained. Same muscle, opposite verdicts. Lighting and clothing fit can swing the read a band in either direction, so do not assume the mirror shows what strangers see.

Keep the overload running, but the higher-leverage move at 21 is usually getting body fat into the 12-to-16 range — at this muscle level, leanness multiplies what you already built instead of adding to it slowly. Cut at a moderate deficit; crash diets at this band surrender hard-won muscle and flatten the exact contours you trained for. One more unglamorous lever: shirts that actually fit the new shoulder-to-waist ratio. Off-the-rack sizing hides this band's progress more often than body fat does.
