FFMIWhat FFMI 26 means
Kouri et al. (1995) found no steroid-free lifter above a normalized FFMI of 25 in their sample, and 26 sits past that line. Statistically, that leaves three explanations: a genuine genetic outlier, a measurement artifact — underestimating body fat inflates FFMI quickly — or pharmacological assistance. The study's limits cut both ways: 157 men from a few gyms is not a census, and a handful of verified drug-free outliers above 25 have been documented since. A number describes a distribution; it cannot diagnose any individual person.
What it actually does to the first-glance physique read
At this mass the physique defines the first impression before anything else gets processed — strangers who know nothing about lifting still register unusually big within the first glance. Off-the-rack clothing stops fitting properly, which can paradoxically weaken the clothed read even as the underlying physique grows. The body-fat interaction still applies: carried at high body fat this band reads strongman-heavy, and only at low body fat does it approach the magazine archetype. Among general audiences, size at this level polarizes more reliably than it impresses.
The highest-leverage next move at FFMI 26
Audit the inputs first. Re-measure height honestly, get a body-fat estimate from a method better than a mirror guess, and recompute — for ordinary lifters, most readings of 26 or higher turn out to be data errors, usually an optimistic body-fat number. If the figure survives scrutiny, the useful questions stop being calculator questions: bloodwork, blood pressure, joint longevity and long-term sustainability now matter more than any additional point. Health markers are themselves part of how you read in person over time.
