PSL Rating
PSL rating is a 1-8 facial attractiveness scale from PUAhate, Sluthate and Lookism forums. What it claims to measure, and why dating behavior disagrees.
What PSL Rating means
PSL stands for PUAhate, Sluthate and Lookism — the three forums where the scale was standardized. It rates faces 1 to 8, with anchors like 'sub-5' and 'PSL god,' and members treat it as an objective measurement of genetic facial quality, deliberately harsher than mainstream ratings. The system grew its own canon: reference faces, decimal disputes, endless threads litigating whether someone is a 4.25 or a 4.5. There is no published methodology behind any of it. The anchors come from forum consensus, which drifted over years and varies by sub-community, so two raters both quoting 'PSL standards' often mean different standards.
What it actually does to the first impression
A real first impression is not a decimal. In the first second or so, an observer registers a holistic read — health, grooming, expression, posture, context — and thin-slicing research (Willis & Todorov, 2006) shows those snap judgments form fast and stick. But the same studies measure agreement, not precision: raters converge on broad bands, never quarter-point distinctions. The things PSL deliberately strips out, like styling and expression, are part of what an actual stranger perceives. A 'pure bone' rating describes your face under conditions nobody ever meets you in.
Reality check: the forums vs the data
Rater agreement on attractiveness is real — Langlois et al. (2000) found people agree more than folk wisdom predicts, across cultures. That much of PSL survives contact with the literature. The decimal precision does not, and neither does the claim that the score fixes your outcomes: photo quality, body composition and grooming all shift how the same face gets rated, which a static bone-score cannot represent. That is why a perceived attractiveness test reports what observers actually react to instead of assigning a number. The honest version of PSL is a vocabulary, not a measurement.
