Evolutionary psychology of attraction: a glossary that says which ideas held up

Evolutionary psychology of attraction glossary: which terms held up, from assortative mating to the dual mating strategy and alpha male myths.

You have probably met these words in a dating thread rather than a textbook: alpha, hypergamy, dual mating strategy, stay in your league. They sound like science because some of them started as science.

The short version: the big, boring findings of evolutionary psychology held up. Stated sex differences in mate preferences replicated across 45 countries, partners resemble each other on many traits, and averaged faces look attractive. Several viral ideas did not. David Buss’s own research group now lists the ovulatory “dual mating” shift as refuted, and the scientist who popularised alpha wolves calls the concept outdated. Every term below carries its status.

What theories explain attraction in evolutionary psychology?

Evolutionary psychology offers theories about pressures on mating, not a dating script.

Sexual selection

Theory. Sexual selection explains traits through differences in mating success: rivals of the same sex competing, and one sex choosing among the other. Darwin set out both forms in The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, first published in 1871. Source

Parental investment theory

Theory. Parental investment is anything a parent puts into one offspring that raises its chance of surviving at the cost of investing in others. Trivers predicted that where one sex invests considerably more, the other sex competes to mate with it, and that where investment is equal, selection acts similarly on both. Source

Sexual strategies theory

Theory. Sexual strategies theory proposes that men and women both evolved mechanisms for short-term and long-term mating. Buss and Schmitt’s 1993 framework set out 9 hypotheses and 22 predictions. Source

Strategic pluralism and the good genes hypothesis

Theory. Strategic pluralism says mating strategies are conditional trade-offs: cues of genetic benefits may matter more in a short-term mate, while willingness to help raise children matters in a long-term one. Human tests of the good-genes idea are mixed; a bias-corrected re-analysis put the link between body asymmetry and fitness-related qualities at only r = 0.08–0.15. Source Source

WEIRD samples

Held up. WEIRD stands for Western, educated, industrialised, rich and democratic populations. Henrich, Heine and Norenzayan reported that 96% of subjects in top psychology journals from 2003 to 2007 came from Western industrialised countries holding 12% of the world’s population (psychology broadly, not attraction research alone). The fair test of any term is whether it made a risky prediction and survived.

Do people want what they say they want?

Partly. Stated preferences differ by sex in consistent ways, but those ideals predict poorly who people actually desire once they meet.

Sex differences in mate preferences

Held up. On questionnaires, men on average value attractiveness and youth more, while women value older partners with financial prospects more. Buss’s 1989 study covered 37 samples from 33 countries (N = 10,047), and a 2020 replication across 45 countries (N = 14,399) found the differences remain robust. Source Source

Stated vs revealed preferences

Mixed. Stated preferences are what people say they want; revealed preferences are who actually attracts them. In speed dating, the classic sex differences appeared in stated ideals but not in live attraction, and a meta-analysis found attractiveness predicted interest in real partners at about r = .40 and earning prospects at about r = .10 for both sexes, a sex difference of only .03. Sociosexuality

Held up. Sociosexuality is a person’s willingness to engage in uncommitted sex. Across 48 nations the sex difference was large and universal, but it shrank in cultures with more political and economic gender equality. Source Source

Mate value

Theory. Mate value is defined in research as the fitness benefits a person would offer as a mate, a model-based construct rather than a fixed score. Source

A questionnaire can reveal a real average and still be a poor forecast for one person’s next date.

Do couples really match?

Yes, partners resemble each other on many traits, including looks. But resemblance does not prove that people deliberately aim for their own level.

Assortative mating

Held up. Assortative mating is the tendency for partners’ characteristics to match systematically, usually through similarity. A 2023 meta-analysis of 480 partner correlations found values from r = 0.08 for extraversion to r = 0.58 for political values, and a review lists active choice, the mating market, shared social environments and convergence as possible causes. Matching hypothesis

Mixed. The matching hypothesis says people seek partners of roughly their own desirability. The 1966 computer dance study designed to test it did not confirm it: a date’s attractiveness was by far the biggest driver of liking, whatever a person’s own looks. Established couples still correlate in attractiveness at r = .39, and an online dating study found matching to different degrees at different stages. Source Source Source

Which physical traits actually predict attractiveness?

A few broad facial patterns are robust. Internet trait checklists go far beyond them.

Attractiveness consensus

Held up. Attractiveness consensus means raters tend to agree on who is and is not attractive. Langlois and colleagues reached that conclusion across eleven meta-analyses, within and across cultures. Source

Averageness

Held up. Averageness is the finding that computer-averaged composite faces look attractive. Composites from three male and three female samples were judged more attractive than almost all the faces that made them up, and more so as faces were added. Source

Symmetry and fluctuating asymmetry

Mixed. Symmetry is attractive in reviews of facial beauty, but the claim that small body asymmetries reveal genetic quality is weak, with a bias-corrected estimate of r = 0.08–0.15. Source Source

Masculinity preference

Mixed. Masculinity preference means preferring masculinised over feminised male faces. Women in the largest longitudinal study (N = 584) preferred masculinised faces, especially for short-term relationships, yet across 12 populations the preference appeared only in highly developed environments. Facial width-to-height ratio

Did not hold up. Facial width-to-height ratio, or fWHR, is face width divided by upper-face height, promoted online as a dominance and attractiveness signal. A meta-analysis found wider faces were judged more threatening (r = .46) but less attractive (r = −.26), and a 2025 analysis of 1,949 faces found no robust sex difference once image capture was considered. Waist-to-hip ratio

Single study. Waist-to-hip ratio compares waist and hip measurements; Singh reported in 1993 that men rated female figures with a lower ratio as more attractive. The popular “0.7 is ideal” line is not in that paper’s abstract. Source

Upper-body strength in men

Single study. In one study, raters’ estimates of physical strength explained over 70% of the variance in men’s bodily attractiveness, and the strongest men were rated most attractive in every sample. Source The practical side is covered in shoulder-to-waist ratio.

A trait can shift perception without being a biological diagnosis.

Do hormones and smell steer desire?

Less than the forums claim. Desire rises around ovulation, but preference shifts toward “good genes” and immune-gene matching in marriages did not hold up.

Ovulatory shift hypothesis

Did not hold up. The ovulatory shift hypothesis proposed that on high-fertility days women feel more attraction to men with traits that once signalled genetic quality. A 2014 meta-analysis supported it, but later large studies found no shift in masculinity preference (N = 584) or in preferences for men’s behaviour. Yet more than 26,000 diary entries from 1,054 women showed ovulatory increases in in-pair and extra-pair desire. Source Source Source Source

Dual mating strategy

Did not hold up. The dual mating strategy hypothesis proposed that near ovulation women seek good genes from uncommitted partners while securing investment from another man. A 2026 paper from Buss’s group lists it as tested repeatedly and refuted, and historical Dutch genealogy put extra-pair paternity at 0.96% per generation over 400 years. Source Source

MHC and the T-shirt study

Mixed. MHC genes shape the immune system; in the 1995 T-shirt study women rated the odour of MHC-dissimilar men as more pleasant, a pattern that reversed among women on the pill. The real-couple version did not hold up: in 3,691 married couples, MHC similarity did not differ from chance. Source Source

Hormones and smell nudge desire; they do not script who people marry.

Which signalling and forum terms survive scrutiny?

Mostly not in the form you hear online. Forum versions take a conditional theory, strip out the conditions and call what is left human nature.

Handicap principle

Mixed. The handicap principle proposed that costly ornaments stay honest because only high-quality males can bear the cost. Grafen’s 1990 model was taken to vindicate it, but Penn and Számadó argue the models support condition-dependent investment instead and call for retiring the principle; the strongest critiques come from that same group, so the dispute is still open. Costly signaling theory, its close cousin, faces the same critique: a 2019 review warns that realised costs are neither necessary nor sufficient evidence of it. Source Source Source

Mate choice copying

Mixed. Mate choice copying means someone becomes more desirable after being seen chosen by others. A meta-analysis found women rated men as more desirable when shown alongside a woman, with high heterogeneity and signs of publication bias. Source

Alpha male

Did not hold up. “Alpha male” borrows a picture of dominance from wolf research. L. David Mech, whose 1970 book helped spread the idea, found wild packs are families led by the breeding parents and now calls the alpha concept outdated. Source Source

Hypergamy

Did not hold up. In demography, educational hypergamy means husbands having more education than wives; the online claim that women always marry up is not what the data show. Across 420 samples in 120 countries, the reversal of the education gender gap was strongly associated with the end of hypergamy. Source

A term that sounds scientific online is only as good as the study behind it.

The bottom line

Evolutionary psychology has real results: stated preference differences replicate, partners resemble each other, and broad patterns in facial perception are not invented. But those findings do not rescue every popular dating claim. The dual-mating preference shift is listed as refuted by Buss’s own group; alpha wolves do not prove an alpha-male hierarchy; hypergamy is a changing education pattern, not a universal female instinct.

The boring findings held up. The viral ones mostly didn’t.

Frequently asked questions

What is the matching hypothesis in psychology?

The matching hypothesis says people tend to choose partners close to themselves in social desirability. The famous 1966 dance study did not confirm that active-choice claim, although established couples do correlate in physical attractiveness; see the attractiveness research methods glossary.

Is the dual mating strategy real?

The dual mating strategy hypothesis proposed a fertile-phase preference for uncommitted sex with men showing genetic-quality cues. Later large and preregistered studies did not support that preference shift, while desire itself does rise around ovulation; the research on what women find attractive explains why context still matters.

Is the alpha male concept real?

The online human idea is not established by wolf research. Wolf scientist L. David Mech calls the alpha concept outdated for typical wild packs, which are family groups led by breeding parents.

What does hypergamy actually mean?

In demography, educational hypergamy means husbands have more education than wives. Census and survey data show that the education gender-gap reversal is associated with the end of educational hypergamy and a rise in hypogamy.

What is assortative mating?

Assortative mating is the tendency for partners’ characteristics to match systematically, usually through similarity. Similarity can come from active choice, the mating market, shared social environments, or convergence; the types of attraction guide places physical attraction in that wider picture.
