We ranked attractiveness research by citation count. Two of the ten most-cited papers are about celebrity endorsements, not faces.

Here is a ranked, checkable list from OpenAlex, with every DOI exposed and a method you can rerun. The point is not to crown a beauty theory. It is to show what the citation graph is actually rewarding.

Why are two marketing papers in the top five?
Because “attractiveness research” is a cross-disciplinary citation graph, not a face-only shelf. Kahle & Homer (1985) ranks fourth and Till & Busler (2000) ranks fifth, and both are about celebrity endorsers.
It does mean that a large share of the citation weight is coming from advertising research.
Caveat: a title census reflects the words authors chose, not the boundaries of a discipline. That limitation is the reason to publish the query, not hide it.

This is also where most of the bad numbers in this niche come from: people cite these papers second-hand and the details drift. We keep a corrected record in attractiveness studies: what famous papers found. Langlois et al. (2000) is a meta-analytic review containing eleven meta-analyses. Its finding is that raters agree with each other about who is attractive, within and across cultures. Buss (1989) surveyed 37 cultures with a total sample of about 10,047 people. Willis & Todorov (2006) is the 100-millisecond first-impression study.

How we built this list (so you can check it)
We queried OpenAlex through its public API on 7 September 2026, pulled the top 50 results for each title query, merged them, and de-duplicated by record ID.
The exact queries were:

The returned corpus sizes were 1,564 works, 1,770, 528, and 110 respectively. We sorted each result by cited_by_count descending, kept the top 50 per query, merged the results, and ranked the de-duplicated records. For comparison, a full-text OpenAlex search covering title, abstract, and indexed full text for “facial attractiveness” returns 106,631 works. That is why this census ranks titles, not mentions.
One honest wrinkle: de-duplication caught two papers that exist twice in OpenAlex under slightly different DOIs. Singh (1993) appears at 1,029 and 1,020 citations; Anderson et al. (2001) appears at 763 and 661. Real citation counts are split across duplicate records, so every count in the table is a floor, not a ceiling.
What a citation count does not mean
It tells you what has been referenced often inside a particular database and search design. It does not tell you that rank one is the best explanation of a face.
When a rating app or forum post says “science shows,” this is the pile it is usually gesturing toward: studies of treatment, first impressions, dating, status, advertising, and physical appearance.
