ModelMax Review: Is the PSL Face Rating App Worth It? An Honest Look
ModelMax locks its PSL face rating behind a subscription: five “Premium” prices, $7.99 to $39.99, plan lengths unstated. Privacy, refunds, alternatives.

You took the front selfie, then the side one, and the PSL score you came for sits behind a subscription. ModelMax is a real, well-rated iPhone app, but it sells an AI opinion in a forum's vocabulary, through five "Premium" prices the listing never labels by plan length. Check the renewal period before paying, and don't read the number as a verdict on your face.
Disclosure: we make a first-impression test (full report $5) and haven't bought ModelMax's subscription; facts checked October 17, 2026. Want the IQ Labs app instead? See our PSL looksmax app review.
ModelMax at a glance
- Price: five "Premium" purchases, $7.99 to $39.99, plan lengths unstated.
- Paywall: before your score.
- Rating: 4.5 stars, 248 US ratings, three written reviews.
- Privacy: the label says photos only; the policy says more.
- Verdict: a fair glow-up checklist, a weak measurement.
Key numbers
- 248 ratings, 3 written reviews: 4.5 stars on the US App Store; 187 five-star, 12 one-star.
- 5 prices, 0 plan lengths: $7.99 to $39.99, each named "Premium."
- June 5, 2025: date of the privacy policy and terms, nine months before the app's March 10, 2026 release.
- 6.9 vs 5.0: free AI rating sites' average score vs human raters' on the same 40 faces (Goshtasbi et al., 2024).
What is ModelMax, and what does "PSL" mean here?
ModelMax is an iPhone app that turns a front and a side selfie into a "PSL score," a "potential score" and ratings for 11 traits, from jawline to under-eye area, then builds a glow-up routine with daily tasks, facial exercises and "Looks Battle" rating duels. "PSL" is borrowed from looksmaxxing forums.
The PSL scale comes from three defunct forums: PUAHate, Sluthate and Lookism. Wikipedia notes it typically runs 1–8 and is considered pseudoscientific. No standards body defines a PSL 5, so every app calibrates its own.
Who makes it: the listing shows developer Pixeltap Studio and seller Evolve App Limited; the policies say "Evolve app Ltd." Two names aren't a red flag by themselves.
Is ModelMax free? Where does the paywall hit?
No. The download is free, but the listing says "Analysis results require a subscription," so the paywall sits between your scan and your score. Subscribers get "unlimited scans." No written review describes the exact screen order.
Credit where due: unlimited scans beat the once-a-week ration some rivals sell. Scan first, pay second is the category's standard paywall, not a ModelMax invention.
How much does ModelMax cost over a year?
The listing doesn't say. Its prices carry no week, month or year, and neither the terms nor the developer's website fills the gap. One price can mean very different bills:
| If the plan renews… | $7.99 tier, per year | $9.99 tier, per year |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly (52 times) | $415.48 | $519.48 |
| Monthly (12 times) | $95.88 | $119.88 |
| Yearly (once) | $7.99 | $9.99 |
Before confirming, read the renewal line on Apple's purchase sheet. If it says "week," multiply by 52.

What do ModelMax users say?
Too few to judge. Behind 248 US ratings sit three written US reviews and two UK ones, all five-star. The 12 one-star ratings carry no text to quote.
- "This app is very accurate" (5 stars, June 6, 2026, US).
- "The advice was very accurate and easy to understand" (5 stars, June 8, 2026, US).
- "was kinda pricey and think it should be free but it boosted my confidence a lot" (5 stars, September 23, 2026, UK).
A confidence boost is real. But "accurate" in a review usually means "matched what I expected."
Is the ModelMax score accurate, and accurate at what?
ModelMax publishes no validation study, no repeat-test data and no definition of its scale. A model can learn which faces people prefer; nobody can check whether ModelMax's numbers are calibrated, or stable across photos of one face.
The concession: in 11 meta-analyses, raters agreed about who is attractive, within and across cultures (Langlois et al., 2000), so taste is learnable. In Goshtasbi's study, AI raters tracked humans closely (r = 0.84) yet scored almost two points high: right pattern, wrong level.
We call this the unlabeled ruler. The price has no unit, and neither does the score: no stated range (1–8? 1–10?), no meaning per number, no method behind "potential." A number without a unit can't be checked.
The ruler also measures the photo. Different photos of one person varied more in rated attractiveness than different people did (Jenkins et al., 2011).
| What ModelMax scores | What a stranger reads first |
|---|---|
| A front and a side selfie | You in motion, at conversational distance |
| A rung on a forum ladder | Whether you clear a well-kept, approachable bar |

Caveat: every photo-based read, ours included, partly measures the camera.
Is ModelMax safe? What happens to your photos?
Billing runs through Apple, so the money side is ordinary. The paperwork is weak: the label declares only photos, while the policy describes wider collection and never mentions face analysis.
- Label vs policy: the label lists photos, "not linked to you," declares no tracking, and "has not been verified by Apple." The policy adds IP address, usage, operating system and approximate location; see how rivals compare.
- Retention: photos are kept "for as long as you use the Application and for a reasonable time thereafter"; deletion means emailing admin@evlvn.com.
- AI: no word on which model reads your face, whether photos train it, or who sees Looks Battle entries. The only named third party is RevenueCat, a billing service.
- Age: rated 4+, though the policy says it "does not address anyone under the age of 13."
- Website: evlvn.com, home of both policies, showed an "App coming soon" page.
None of this shows misuse. It shows thin paperwork for a face app.
How do you cancel ModelMax and get a refund?
Cancel in your Apple account; deleting the app doesn't stop renewals. Refunds go through Apple, since ModelMax's terms have no refund clause.
- Cancel: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ModelMax → Cancel Subscription (Apple).
- Refund: reportaproblem.apple.com → "I'd like to" → "Request a refund" → reason and item → Submit. Apple says to expect an update in 24 to 48 hours (Apple).
- Photos: email admin@evlvn.com to request deletion.
Request wording: our cancel-and-refund guide.
Who should use ModelMax, and what should you use instead?
Use it for a daily glow-up checklist, once you've confirmed the plan length. Skip it if you want to know how you come across to people.
- No price sheet first: see free PSL rating options or looksmaxxing apps with no paywall.
- The missing axis: ModelMax rates face geometry, not your whole first impression. Our test reads that, from about a minute of questions and two photos, with a result about 40 seconds later. The analysis runs before you pay and shows your band, appeal personality and one strength. The full report is $5, one-time, no subscription: your exact read and natural ceiling on a 70–155 axis (median everyday man ≈110), face, physique and outfit part by part, and a dated 7/30/90-day plan. Frequent testers can choose $10 a month for three reports plus unlimited analyses. It isn't a validated clinical instrument either.
If checking your score becomes a daily ritual that leaves you feeling worse, the app has stopped helping. A forum ladder isn't your worth; here are the warning signs.
The bottom line
ModelMax is legitimate, frequently updated and aims its daily advice at sensible basics like skin and sleep. But it prices with unlabeled plans, scores with an unlabeled ruler, and runs on generic 2025 policies silent on face analysis.
Your face doesn't have a score that decides your life. It has an effect on people, formed fast and more movable than a number admits. See where your read lands: the analysis runs first, and the full report is $5, once.

Frequently asked questions
Is ModelMax free?
Free to download, not free to use. The App Store listing says “Analysis results require a subscription,” and it lists five in-app purchases, all named Premium, at $7.99, $9.99, $19.99, $34.99 and $39.99, without saying how long each plan lasts. Our explainer on why face rating apps make you pay to see results covers the pattern.
How much does ModelMax cost per week or per year?
The listing doesn't say which price is weekly, monthly or yearly. By arithmetic, if the $7.99 tier renews weekly it costs $415.48 a year; if monthly, $95.88. Read the renewal line on Apple's purchase sheet before you confirm. Our face rating app pricing index shows what rival apps charge.
Is the ModelMax PSL score accurate?
Nobody can check. ModelMax publishes no validation study, no repeat-test data and no definition of its scale. PSL itself is an informal forum ladder, not a standard, and different photos of one face can rate very differently. Our guide to the PSL scale explains where the tiers come from.
Is ModelMax the same app as PSL - Looksmax & Ascend?
No. ModelMax is sold by Evolve App Limited under the developer name Pixeltap Studio, though its listing calls the app “PSL” throughout. PSL - Looksmax & Ascend is a separate app from IQ Labs, covered in our PSL looksmax app review.
How do I cancel ModelMax and get a refund?
On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, pick the ModelMax subscription and tap Cancel Subscription; deleting the app does not cancel it. Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides, and ModelMax's terms have no refund clause of their own. Our cancel-and-refund guide has wording that helps.
