Someone tells you to wear red for a first date: change one colour, improve the odds. But the answer depends on who wears it and who rates it.
For men wearing red, women’s ratings are roughly unchanged: preregistered studies found d = −0.10, and a preregistered replication with 640 women found no effect. For women wearing red, the pooled effect is small and shrank as methods improved. (Lehmann et al., 2018; Wagge et al., 2019)
Our view is simple: red is a rounding error; fit is the signal.

Does wearing red make you more attractive?
For a man wearing red, there is no reliable attraction lift to plan around. The strongest direct summary is the preregistered evidence: women rating men showed d = −0.10, while the CREP replication pooled 640 women and found no effect on attractiveness or sexual attractiveness. (Lehmann et al.; Wagge et al.)
For men rating women, d = 0.26 was small, varied, and declined over time—not a useful promise for your date.
The null result does not prove red can never matter in any setting; it says the average effect is too weak and unstable to be good advice for men.
Where did the red dress effect come from?
The modern claim began with Elliot and Niesta’s 2008 five-experiment paper: men rated a woman as more attractive and sexually desirable when red was paired with her photo. The result was specific to attraction-related judgments; red did not change ratings of likeability, kindness, or intelligence. (Elliot and Niesta, 2008)
Four experiments put red behind a black-and-white photo; only Experiment 5 changed the woman’s shirt colour. Across five experiments, 149 male US undergraduates took part; the largest sample was 37.
The 2010 follow-up reversed the question: it reported seven experiments; its nine small sub-experiments totalled 308 participants (largest sample 57), with higher ratings for men in red. Retellings that swap the study’s direction are wrong. (Elliot et al., 2010)
Experiment 5 also asked 23 men about hypothetical dating and spending, not observed dating behaviour.

What happened when researchers tried to replicate it?
The replication record is mixed at the edges but clear in the middle: better-powered and preregistered tests repeatedly weakened or erased the headline effect. One online experiment found a red effect with just 25 participants; a close replication with 433 found none. (Pazda et al., 2012; Peperkoorn et al., 2016)
Here is the compact record. “Supported” means the study reported the predicted result; “null” means it did not find a significant red advantage.

The positive headline weakened when larger, preregistered tests repeated it.
Replication is not a magic word: the exact stimulus and outcome still matter, but the direction of the accumulated evidence matters more than one vivid result.
What does the 2018 meta-analysis actually say?
The 2018 meta-analysis did not say “red does nothing.” It said the answer depends on the direction of rating, and that the apparent effect is much smaller in preregistered work. For men rating women, the pooled estimate was d = 0.26; for women rating men, it was d = 0.13, with evidence of upward bias. (Lehmann et al., 2018)
Here, d is a standardised difference between conditions; 0.2 is conventionally small. The analyses pooled 45 contrasts and 2,961 men, and 36 contrasts and 2,739 participants. More data add weight, not a dependable personal forecast.
Preregistered studies found d = 0.10 for men rating women and d = −0.10 for women rating men, with r² = .002. Smaller studies showed bigger effects for women rating men, and the decline suggested the original work overestimated the true effect.
It was an adversarial collaboration: Andrew Elliot, who led the original studies, wrote it with researchers whose replications had failed, and the paper presents both readings, including Elliot’s view that colour research is inherently complex.
Meta-analysis improves the map, but it still averages artificial ratings rather than telling you what one person will do on one date.
Does red work for men, in any culture?
No culture currently gives men a reliable red shortcut. A Chinese study with 55 women supplied one positive result, but later Chinese studies were mixed: red did not help masculine-looking faces in a 539-participant study, and a larger 480-person experiment found no significant effect after a smaller 160-person experiment did. (Elliot et al., 2010; Wen et al., 2022; Hong et al., 2024)
Wen et al. (2014) found a sexual-attraction effect only for women with more feminine features. Luo and Shamey (2023) found no general effect among Caucasian and Chinese male observers; Pontes and Hoegg (2020) found that married women rated men shown on a red background as less attractive.
In Hesslinger et al. (2015), formal apparel raised men’s ratings where colour did not.
Cross-cultural findings can reveal moderators, but one positive arm or one negative arm is not a universal wardrobe rule.
What about the red hitchhiker, waitress and dating-ad studies?
Field studies are tempting because they involve behaviour, not just sliders on a screen. They are also where the evidence needs the most careful labeling: red increased some real-world responses in Guéguen studies, while other data went the other way and the author’s separate sexual-intent paper was retracted.
In the hitchhiker study, five female confederates in different-colour t-shirts more male drivers stopped for the woman in red, while female drivers showed no colour effect. Nick Brown and James Heathers later said the printed HSL values labeled “red” as salmon-pink and “blue” as pure white; that is critics’ blog analysis, not peer-reviewed evidence. Two Guéguen and Jacob field studies reported that 11 waitresses in five restaurants got more tips in red from male patrons, and that women’s red-clothed internet ads got more male contacts. The separate sexual-intent paper was retracted because four of eight reported mean/SD combinations were impossible for the sample sizes; Retraction Watch later reported at least four retractions for the author. Why do people still believe the red effect?
Because the first paper is memorable, easy to summarize, and heavily cited. OpenAlex counted 437 citations for the 2008 original versus 36 for the 2018 meta-analysis; even from 2019 onward, the original had 150 citing works versus 34 for the meta-analysis. The 2010 original had 188 citations, versus 79 for three failed replications. (2008 paper; 2010 paper; 2018 meta-analysis)
Citation counts are not votes, and older papers have had more time to accumulate them. The imbalance helps explain why writers encounter the original first. A press release called the 2010 effect consistent across the US, England, Germany, and China, although China rested on one experiment with 55 women. (University of Rochester via ScienceDaily)
On First Dates, men and women wore more red on the date than in the pre-date interview; the pattern was stronger for black, while blue did not change. This shows people act on presentation beliefs, not that red improved outcomes; the study had no outcome data. (Kramer and Mulgrew, 2018)
A weak claim becomes a rule, then self-surveillance. Ask what your clothes communicate as a whole and whether they help you show up comfortably.
The myth survives partly because the evidence is not empty; it survives because the most quotable result is not the most reliable result.
So what should a man wear on a first date?
Wear the colour that fits the setting and makes the outfit look deliberate, but prioritise fit, formality, grooming, and comfort over red. Red and black were approximately equal in a real-clothing study, and colour associations remained when raters could not see the colour, suggesting the wearer’s expression or posture may matter as much as the hue.
