What Forward Growth means
Forward growth describes the direction the maxilla and mandible took while the face developed: forward and up, which projects the chin, jawline and under-eye support, versus down and back, which lengthens the face and tucks the chin toward the neck. Genetics does most of the steering; orthodontists still argue about how much childhood mouth-breathing and habits contribute. Either way, once growth plates fuse in the late teens the direction is recorded history. You read it best from a relaxed side profile, not a posed selfie.
What it actually does to the first impression
A forward-grown face tends to read compact and structured from the side and at three-quarter angles — chin in line with the lips, jaw distinct from the neck, under-eyes supported. Downswung growth can read longer and a touch tired from those same angles. Front-on, where most first impressions actually happen, the difference shrinks to a background variable, and eyes plus expression carry far more of the 1.2-second read. Caveat: lots of well-liked faces sit in the unremarkable middle of this axis.
Reality check: the forums vs the data
The community turned forward growth into a theory of everything, and into a sales pitch: mew hard enough and your adult maxilla will come forward. It will not. Adult bone does not remodel from tongue pressure, and the documented adult route is orthognathic surgery — jaw advancement under general anaesthesia, usually prescribed for bite function or sleep apnea, with real risk and a long recovery. That is a medical decision made with a surgeon, not a looks upgrade to order. For everyone else, posture, leanness and grooming are the levers that still move.
