Mandible
The mandible is the lower jawbone, a core masculine signal in a male face. Body fat hides or reveals it; the bone itself barely changes after puberty.
What Mandible means
The mandible is the lower jawbone — the only movable bone in the face, running from the chin through the body to the gonial angle, then up the ramus to the jaw joint. It carries the lower teeth, anchors the masseter and the other chewing muscles, and outlines the entire lower-face silhouette. Male and female mandibles diverge sharply at puberty under androgen exposure: broader, taller, squarer in men on average. That is why this single bone does so much work when a face reads 'male' from across a room. Averages, though — individual overlap is large.
What it actually does to the first impression
Lower-face structure is among the fastest dimorphism cues a glance can grab. A defined mandible separates face from neck, squares the silhouette, and pushes the read toward adult and masculine before any individual feature registers — consistent with how quickly trait judgments form (Willis & Todorov, 2006). Strong jaws also feed the dominance axis of snap judgments, and dominance is context-dependent: an asset in some first meetings, mildly off-putting in others. A soft jawline does not doom a first impression either; warmth cues and grooming carry real weight inside the same 1.2 seconds.
Reality check: the forums vs the data
Split this into the two halves forums love to merge. The bone: fixed after growth ends, untouched by mewing, chewing gum or jawline trainers — only orthognathic surgery or implants change it, and masseter hypertrophy from chewing adds width at the angle rather than a new jawline. The soft tissue: hugely changeable. Submental fat obscures mandibular definition long before genetics does, and many men discover a usable jawline simply by dropping body fat. The honest hierarchy: body fat first, posture second, beard as an optical tool third, surgery the expensive distant last.
