Jaw training

Jaw training: chewing-resistance devices (Jawzrsize and clones) sold to sharpen the jawline. They grow masseter muscle, not bone — and TMJ pays the bill.

What Jaw training means

Jaw training means working the chewing muscles against resistance — silicone bite devices like Jawzrsize, or extreme amounts of hard gum such as mastic. The mechanism is real but narrow: the masseter is a muscle, and it hypertrophies under load like any other. What doesn't happen is bone change. The mandible's shape, the gonial angle, chin projection — none of it responds to chewing in adults. The marketing photos show wider lower faces because the masseter sits right at the jaw's corner.

What it actually does to the first impression

Masseter growth widens the back third of the lower face. Whether that helps your first impression depends entirely on your starting geometry — on a narrow face it can add presence, on an already-square face it pushes toward bulky and can blur the jaw's angle rather than sharpen it. Dermatologists inject Botox into masseters precisely to slim faces this muscle has widened. Jawline definition at a glance is mostly body fat anyway. Chewing harder won't uncover a jawline; a calorie deficit will.

Reality check: the forums vs the data

The downside is the temporomandibular joint. TMJ disorder is common to begin with, and dentists and oral surgeons consistently warn that loading the joint with daily resistance chewing is a plausible trigger for clicking, pain, and locking — complaints that show up regularly in user reviews of these devices. Asymmetric chewing also trains asymmetric muscle. If your masseters are genuinely underdeveloped it's a marginal tool with real joint risk; for the recessed-chin problems people actually buy it for, it does nothing.
