Sexual Dimorphism

How much a face leans toward male vs female traits. The base concept under most face-attraction research, and preference for it shifts with context.

What Sexual Dimorphism means

Sexual dimorphism is the set of average differences between male and female faces. The dimorphic male traits are a heavier, wider jaw, a more prominent brow ridge, a longer lower face, thinner lips and a wider face relative to its height; female-shaped traits run the opposite way. Most of these emerge at puberty under sex hormones. Almost every face-attraction study sits on this axis, because researchers can morph a face more or less masculine and measure how the rating changes. It is the underlying dimension, not one feature.

What it actually does to the first impression

Dimorphic masculine cues read fast as dominance, maturity and physical capability, the jaw and brow do real work in the first glance. But the link from masculinity to attractiveness is not a straight upward line. The well-known finding is that stated preference for masculine male faces shifts with context: women's preferences move across the menstrual cycle and between short and long-term framing, and the most masculine face is often not the most liked, with many people preferring a slightly-above-average rather than maximally dimorphic male face (Little et al., 2011). Femininity in women's faces tracks attractiveness more cleanly than masculinity does in men's.

Reality check: the forums vs the data

Looksmaxxing flattens all this into more masculine equals higher value, which the research does not support. Maximal dimorphism reads as dominant but also, past a point, as colder or less trustworthy, and the preferred male face in many studies is moderately, not extremely, masculine. Context matters: the same jaw that wins on a dating profile can read as harsh elsewhere. There is also a perception-versus-reality gap the site is built around, since how a feature is read in 1.2 seconds depends on expression, grooming and setting as much as on bone. Treat dimorphism as one dial among many, not the master score.
