Canthal Tilt
Canthal tilt: the angle between inner and outer eye corners. Positive tilt reads alert; its real first-impression effect is smaller than forums say.
What Canthal Tilt means
Draw a straight line from the inner corner of your eye (medial canthus) to the outer corner (lateral canthus). The angle that line makes against horizontal is your canthal tilt. Outer corner higher: positive. Lower: negative. Most faces fall within a few degrees either way. Community calculators treat anything from +4 to +8 degrees as ideal for men, but that range is forum lore, not clinical consensus. Measuring it from a selfie is shaky too — tilt your head two degrees, or shoot from below eye level, and the number moves more than the trait itself varies between most people.
What it actually does to the first impression
Eyes get fixated early in a first glance, so tilt does feed the read. A slight upward tilt tends to register as alert and awake; a clearly negative tilt can scan as tired or sad before any conscious thought happens — Willis & Todorov (2006) found trait impressions stabilize after roughly 100 milliseconds of exposure. But tilt never arrives alone. Eyelid exposure, dark circles, brow position and how much you smile all blend into the same signal. Nobody walks away thinking 'his canthal angle was negative.' They register a mood, and tilt is one modest input into that mood.
Reality check: the forums vs the data
Forums treat tilt as a binary verdict. It is not. Plenty of men widely considered good-looking carry neutral or slightly negative tilt, and a genuine smile temporarily lifts the outer eye area anyway. No published study isolates canthal tilt as an independent driver of attractiveness ratings; it always travels with the rest of the orbital region. Canthoplasty to chase two or three degrees is real surgery with real risks, taken on for a detail most observers cannot even name. If your photos read 'tired,' sleep, allergies and screen habits are cheaper suspects than your skeleton.
